Dovetail Staircase & Mezzanine Floor.
Working with Momentum multi award winning design led structural engineering practice, the brief was to transform a two storey barn out building in to an innovative music room, the clients were musicians who required an area where they could both play and enjoy listening to music.
The 1st floor mezzanine level would be an area to relax and unwind while enjoying the music, this would be formed by using a combination of solid oak posts and beams and stainless steel fabricated brackets, both the posts and beams were varying width and depth this was specified to form octave waves to enhance the acoustic from the ground floor studio area.
The staircase leading to the mezzanine would be self-supported and constructed using traditional dovetail joints to the treads and risers. This provided both an innovative and contemporary look which worked well with the mezzanine, the dovetails also provided an extremely strong and stable joint, allowing the main run of the flight to remain unsupported between the landing and winding section.
Glass balustrades and an Oak handrail provide the finish touch and the result is a stunning combination of design, materials and science.
The studio provides the ideal acoustic levels for playing and the mezzanine a relaxing area where the music can be fully appreciated.
